December 14, 2006 - If you have never watched American Idol or heard of Jennifer Hudson, there is little doubt that you will be familiar with both - and intimately - by the time Oscar nominations are handed out next year. Hudson, a runner-up on the TV series' 2004 season, makes her acting debut in Bill Condon's Dreamgirls, and it's safe to say that terms like "star-making turn" were invented for performances like hers. That said, there are a few other recognizable faces in the film's ensemble - including Jamie Foxx, Beyonce Knowles and Eddie Murphy - but even with their own worthy turns in this terrific new musical, Hudson steals the show - and she's sure to steal your heart as well.

Hudson stars as Effie White, the boisterous lead singer of an R&B group called the Dreamettes, which also features Deena Jones (Knowles) and Lorrell Robinson (Anika Noni Rose). Crestfallen after a loss at a local talent show, the trio is ready to abandon its dreams of a singing career; but when an ambitious promoter named Curtis Taylor Jr. (Foxx) hires the girls to sing back-up for local legend James "Thunder" Early (Murphy), they soon become a hot property in their own right. Before long, they are playing to sold-out crowds and celebrating one hit record after the next; but each of the girls soon discovers that there is a price to pay with fame and fortune, and each must deal with that cost in her own way.

Having already seen the film twice, I can attest that no simple description of the plot does the story justice, even though there is very little in the film that we haven't seen before - the girls' rise to success, their fall from grace, and their ultimate personal and professional redemption. Predictably, it's in the performances themselves that the film is truly distinguished; from the first frame, the film, the actors have captured and completely embodied their characters, creating real people out of potential clichés.

Dream girls
Review: Actually lives up to the hype.
by Todd Gilchrist

As the film's man of vision, Jamie Foxx forgoes likeability playing Curtis Taylor Jr., and somehow still finds his humanity; as an A-lister on the rise, he could easily have turned up the star wattage and outshone the character's flaws, but he seems to revel in them, suggesting that Curtis can no more recognize than he can stop his inevitable self-destruction. Meanwhile Murphy, usually more a reliable check-casher than actor, actually creates a real person in James Early - despite the many opportunities the script affords him to indulge the classic "Eddie" persona he's cultivated over the past three decades.

Most surprising of the established cast is Knowles, who has enjoyed passing success as an actor; her turn as Deena is brilliantly understated in an ensemble full of big personalities. But again it's Hudson who shines the brightest in this, her first major role (and one suspects not her last). From her very first appearance in the film, Hudson owns the screen, and she dominates it both as a character and a performer; while Effie would ordinarily be an opportunity for an actress to overact, chew scenery and otherwise take out her co-stars, Hudson brings remarkable tenderness to the character so that even when we disagree with her sometimes self-pitying behavior, we empathize and understand it.

Director Bill Condon, who previously directed Kinsey and Gods and Monsters, has found another tale to explore of a driven man (Taylor Jr.) who sacrifices his own humanity in order to fulfill his vision - in this case Taylor Jr. a stand-in for Motown's Berry Gordy. Having also written 2002's Chicago, the director was already well-versed in the motions of a major musical; but Condon's work here blows away its predecessor, if for no other reason than he manages to create a world where the real (acting) and theatrical (singing) believably co-exist. As a person who doesn't care much for musicals, Dreamgirls is one of the few modern films of that genre that captivated me from start to finish - and as mentioned above, twice thus far.

Superlatives for the entire cast notwithstanding, it's hard to imagine the last time a studio mounted a major motion picture like this one that was driven almost singularly by a newcomer. But Jennifer Hudson is just incredible as Effie, and she really does deserve the lion's share of the credit for the movie's effectiveness; even with so many other talented people on screen and behind the cameras, her character provides the moral and emotional throughline for the film, and Hudson innately understands how hard to push both her vocal and acting performances. But whether you're watching to discover a new talent in development or just see Eddie Murphy act again, Dreamgirls is one of the few "great" movies released in 2006 that actually lives up to the hype; and hey, if you don't believe me, just keep an eye out for those Oscar noms in early '07.
