Stomp The Yard
Review: A substantial offering for the You Got Served set.
by Todd Gilchris

January 11, 2007 - In less capable hands, Stomp The Yard would be 2007's answer to You Got Served -- a showcase for choreographers that slowed down only when its filmmakers attempted to interject "off the dance floor" drama. Indeed, there has been a recent slate of these movies, including Save The Last Dance, Honey, Step Up and Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights -- almost none of which were concerned enough with story or characters to maintain the pretense that it was in fact something other than a big-screen dance-off.

Such is not the case with Stomp The Yard, a movie that will be unfairly lumped in with these earlier efforts. While it enjoys more than its share of showdown moments and spectacular dance scenes, there is something substantive at its heart -- so much so, in fact, that it deserves a place not only above the ranks of its predecessors, but in the canon of outstanding films documenting the modern African-American experience.

The movie stars Columbus Short (who actually appeared in You Got Served) as DJ, a hotshot dancer who is shipped off to college after his older brother, Duron (Chris Brown), is killed in a dancefloor hustle gone wrong. Burying his nose in books at Truth University, DJ tries to maintain a lifestyle of quiet anonymity. But when he inadvertently runs afoul of some of the campus' Greek leaders, most notably Grant (Darrin Henson), he discovers that his old tricks might come in handy in delivering his enemy a much-needed comeuppance.

Recruited by Grant's rival, Sylvester (Brian J. White), to join a fraternity, and further, their step squad, DJ soon discovers that college life is more complicated and challenging than just surviving classroom quizzes. With a new cache of friends to support him, DJ must decide if he will continue to move forward or if he will own up to, and ultimately overcome, his troubled past.

Truth be told there's almost no way to describe the plot of this film without sounding hokey, if not ridiculous. Yeah, there are more than a few musical interludes and enough dance sequences to satisfy the folks who could care less if this kid gets an education or improves anything other than his bank account. But the movie does care, and this concern for portraying college life and the Greek system at least semi-authentically elevates the material above standard-fare fallouts and showdowns. In particular, Sylvester's "sales pitch" to DJ is the most important moment in the film because it advertises the true value of joining a fraternal organization: not for the perks or the pleasures, but for the lifelong community each member creates with his brothers. (It should be noted that this critic never joined a college fraternity -- not the least of which because no one ever offered me the kind of speech White gives here.)

Beyond even this single moment, however, the movie emphasizes that DJ is at school to get an education, and he works hard to live up to the expectations of his relatives and friends. Few of these dance films stress the academic portion of college life, instead providing ample opportunity to show off the central character's physical prowess. Screenwriter Robert Adetuyi (Codename: The Cleaner) and director Sylvain White (I'll Always Know What you Did Last Summer) wisely emphasize that DJ -- as an individual student and a member of the Greek community -- is part of a larger legacy of African-American academia. So while it may superficially appear laughable that the filmmakers juxtapose DJ's dilemma with portraits of Martin Luther King Jr., the civil rights leader's membership in Alpha Phi Alpha signifies a history deeper than the origins of "serving" people.

All of that isn't to say that there aren't clichés mined or formulas resuscitated. My personal favorite Drumline dealt with a similar story almost beat for beat. But like Drumline or even Spike Lee's fantastic School Daze, Stomp The Yard is a film worth far more than the sum of its parts. In fact, its greatest lesson for the audience is the same one that DJ learns over the course of the film: Namely, that there is substance to be found in even the flashiest spectacle -- if you know where to look. At a time of year when theaters are filled with flashy, fun, but empty offerings, Stomp The Yard is a surprisingly satisfying alternative.
