Children of Men envisages a world one generation from now that has fallen into anarchy on the heels of an infertility defect in the population. The world's youngest citizen has just died at 18, and humankind is facing the likelihood of its own extinction. Set against the backdrop of London torn apart by violence and nationalistic sects, the film follows disillusioned bureaucrat Theo (Owen) as he becomes an unlikely champion of Earth's survival. Children of Men
Review: One of the best films of the year.
by Stax

December 21, 2006 - Director Alfonso Cuarón's stunning big-screen version of the P.D. James novel Children of Men is one of the best pictures of 2006. Adapted to the screen by screenwriters Timothy J. Sexton, David Arata and Mark Fergus & Hawk Ostby, the film takes place in Great Britain in the year 2027 -- a time where hope is dwindling along with humanity's chances for survival.

Inexplicably, women around the world have been unable to bear children for the last 19 years, meaning the human race is going to die out in roughly 50 years. Chaos and separatism have become a way of life for some, while others seek a unified world and equal rights. Only the imperialistic Great Britain has managed to survive the internal strife that has ravaged so many other nations, but with that has come a deluge of illegal refugees (dubbed "fugees") seeking safe haven. The totalitarian government is having none of this; the fugees are rounded up into camps before they are deported.

Inhabiting this bleak world is Theo (Clive Owen), a political activist-turned-bureaucrat whose passion for life evaporated after the death of his child some years before. His only true friend is Jasper (Michael Caine), a Lennonesque old hippie and activist colleague who lives in seclusion with his ailing wife in the woods outside London.

Theo is shaken from his apathy after being abducted by masked gunmen. They take him to see Julian (Julianne Moore), Theo's ex-flame and the mother of his now deceased child. She is a leader of a covert, militant separatist faction that fights for the rights of fugees. She has surfaced to seek Theo's help in getting transit papers for the streetwise Kee (Clare-Hope Ashitey), a young African woman in her group who needs to be safely escorted out of the country. Theo agrees to help but only for the money.

Theo and the group undertake a perilous trek through the countryside on their way to the coast, where a boat waits to take Kee to the Human Project -- a near-mythic organization that has brought together the world's greatest minds in the hopes of building a new society. After surviving an attack, Theo realizes that Kee is not merely a fugee but nothing short than the last hope for humanity: She is eight months pregnant. However, both the anarchists and their enemies in power will seek to use this miracle child for political gain so Theo and Kee must go it alone. With his passion for life and activism slowly reawakened, Theo will risk everything to get Kee to the Human Project.

Featuring solid performances across the board and a moving story, Children of Men powerfully conjures a vision of tomorrow that is only a slightly exaggerated version of today. There are no flying cars or laser guns; people don't wear silver spacesuits or live under a giant glass dome. People still dress the same, collect art, visit cafés and go to their humdrum jobs -- and still hate and kill each other. Terrorism, bigotry, fascism, fear and hopelessness are more evident than ever.

Cuarón and his team have envisioned a truly dismal world but they had to in order to show how much a child can symbolize the hope for a better tomorrow. The director employs long takes, especially in combat scenes, creating some of the most arresting images and impressive sequences of his career. You are there with Theo as he runs for his life through the gunfire and the muck and the chaos. You are there when a terrorist bomb explodes without warning inside the café you left moments before. These techniques firmly establish the world of fear and despair that the characters inhabit.

The film is heavily steeped in Biblical symbolism, with Theo (as in theologian?) serving more like Moses than as a Christ figure. He is there to lead his people to the Promised Land that is the Human Project. Kee is indeed the "key" to the human race's survival, but she is no Virgin Mary; she isn't even sure who the baby's father is as she's had so many sexual partners. Jasper, in a way, is like John the Baptist, a voice crying out in the wilderness. Film scholars will surely be mining Children of Men for years to come.

While it is so devoid of fantastical elements that it feels odd to even call it science-fiction, Children of Men -- like the best and most intelligent science-fiction films before it -- uses the genre as a means to explore the world and issues of the present. The vision of tomorrow that the filmmakers have created is terrifying and grim, but it ultimately promises hope and a new beginning -- a message that we need to hear today.
