There is evidence to suggest that children are highly susceptible to paranormal phenomenon. They can see what adults cannot, they believe what adults deny. In 'The Messengers', a suspense thriller starring Kristen Stewart, Dylan McDermott, Penelope Anne Miller and John Corbett, the Solomon family has left big city life for a secluded farm in North Dakota. Soon after they arrive at their new home, 16 year-old Jess and her 3 year-old brother begin seeing ominous apparitions that no one else can see, and are repeatedly attacked by something from the other side. Now they must try desperately to warn the rest of the family before it's too late.

Epic Movie Review
by Chillopy.com

I can’t say that I was surprised to learn that “Epic Movie” would not be screened in advance for critics, but I must say that my feelings were a little bit hurt. A crude, scatological parody of a handful of big-budget, inexplicably popular movies from the past two years — what would be more likely to warm a critic’s withered, cynical heart?

20th Century Fox, which released the movie — it mocks (and thus promotes) some of the studio’s own product — might have feared negative reviews. More likely, Fox executives figured that reviews would be irrelevant, since “Epic Movie,” like other examples of its kind (including “Date Movie,” also the work of Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer, writers and directors of this one), is a piece of film criticism in its own right. It is irreverent and also appreciative, dragging its satiric prey down to the lowest pop-cultural denominator.

The target audience is anyone who has seen, ideally more than once, “Nacho Libre,” “The Chronicles of Narnia,” “Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle,” “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” the “X-Men” pictures, “Superman Returns” and “The Da Vinci Code” — among others.

That’s me! And also, more germanely, the 14- and 15-year-olds who had apparently been excused from school to attend a noon showing at the local multiplex. They seemed to have a good time, especially when women in bikinis showed up on screen or when there was a joke involving urine. (Both things happened a lot.)

The humor is coarse and occasionally funny. The archly bombastic score, by Edward Sheamur, is the only thing you might call witty. But happily, Jennifer Coolidge and Fred Willard show up, as the White Bitch and Aslo the Lion, to add some easy, demented class. Ms. Coolidge is greeted, by Kal Penn, with “Whoa, Stifler’s Mom,” a tribute to her role in “American Pie,” a movie that would qualify, to most of the audience, as “old.”

So would this critic, who nonetheless was amused by the parodies of “MTV Cribs” and “Punk’d,” and was further relieved that, unlike the movies it sends up, “Epic Movie” is short.

“Epic Movie” is rated PG-13 (Parents strongly cautioned). It has — it is — vulgar humor and naughty words.

Review: A cast of thousands! And three or four laughs, maybe.
by Scott Collura

January 26, 2007 - Epic Movie, opening today from 20th Century Fox, is the latest entry in what was once a long and proud line of spoof-centric comedies that rib pop culture and, often more specifically, Hollywood movies themselves. Mel Brooks perfected the form in the '70s with pictures like High Anxiety (a Hitchcock spoof), Silent Movie (silent era spoof), and Young Frankenstein (figure it out for yourself). In more recent years, the Scary Movie series has doggedly continued this trend, making up for in persistence what Brooks' films had in substance. And now, from the gentlemen who wrote the first Scary Movie, Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer, comes Epic Movie, a logical if disappointing extension of that tried and true series.

Like last year's Date Movie before it, which was written by the pair for Fox (whereas the Scary Movies are the domain of Dimension Films), Epic Movie looks to mine the richness of pop culture reference points from a wide swath of the entertainment world, rather than just satirizing one or two genres like the horror-skewing Scary Movie series (in its earlier entries, anyway). The result is a breathless 86-minute tour of at least a dozen Hollywood films, as well as a multitude of TV series, catchphrases, popular personas, and more.

The picture kicks off with an introduction to the four leads: Edward (Kal Penn), Peter (Adam Campbell), Lucy (Jayma Mays), and Susan (Faune A. Chambers), each in their own vignette. Penn is an unlikely adult Indian orphan in a Mexican orphanage a la Nacho Libre; Campbell is a chicken version of the Angel from X-Men: The Last Stand; Mays is uncovering clues in a Da Vinci Code riff; and Chambers is traveling to find her parents along with Snakes on a Plane. Soon the four, all parentless and unwanted, converge on a Willy Wonka sorta fellow (an underutilized Crispin Glover) and quickly have their organs and extremities harvested - during a musical number — for use in Willy's candy. Penn's fate in particular is memorable, as he gets his nuts cracked — but not in the same way that it happens in the real Willy Wonka.

By the next scene, the group have had their injuries somehow repaired, but it's fine that this quick fix is inexplicable: We're not looking for logic in this film. The presence of a boom microphone in a shot, however, is not acceptable, but we get that anyway in a close-up of Penn a few minutes later. It's not intentionally there, or if it is it's not played for laughs at all, but it does give the viewer the impression that Epic Movie is a rushed, at times poorly constructed endeavor. And that includes its screenplay and jokes.

The problem with Epic Movie is that it's rarely funny, even when given such ripe material as Superman Returns, Borat, Pirates of the Caribbean, and more. Take the Superman scene (there's just one, and it's the bullet-in-the-eye moment that has been playing in the film's trailer for weeks now). Why not have some fun with the Superman film's perceived failings, both critically and at the box office, rather than just go for the obvious pratfall? "Owww! My eye!" Geez, why not have Mr. Furley eavesdropping in the next room while you're at it?

That said, some moments of genuine humor do creep in, as when our quartet shows up at Harry Potter's school only to find a creepy, unshaven adult-man Harry; a large, lecherous Ron; and a pregnant (with cesarean scar!) and smoking spiteful Hermione. "I hope you brought condoms," she sneers at the newcomers. Or how about when Mr. Tumnus (Héctor Jiménez) and his beaver friend (the voice of Katt Williams) turn out to be "life partners?" Oh, and a segue into an episode of Cribs as we enter Tumnus' home is cute, even if it doesn't go anywhere.

But, alas, there's not much more that's all that funny here. Penn's willingness to appear in this picture and to completely ape his way through the proceedings is embarrassing, and it seems that he's quickly becoming the younger version of Christopher Walken: If the paycheck is right, he'll take the gig. Campbell and Chambers don't register much at all, good or bad, though the one bright light in the main cast is Jayma Mays, who many will remember as Hiro's doomed girlfriend from Heroes. She takes the standard role in these films of the dumb chick and gives it her own twitchy, flighty twist, with her penchant to break bottles over the heads of everyone around her being a particularly amusing running gag.

Elsewhere, many of the regular cameo players from Friedberg and Seltzer's oeuvre also show up, including Carmen Electra in full X-Men/Mystique bare and blue costume (perhaps worth the price of admission alone), Jennifer Coolidge as the "White Bitch" of "Gnarnia," Fred Willard sort of embarrassing himself as the half-naked lion-man "Aslo," and so on. Yeah, it's funny when Penn breaks the fourth wall and calls Coolidge "Stifler's Mom." But then to have to wait another 20 minutes for the next chuckle? Go rent Blazing Saddles instead.
